The Counting Tree



Learning Outcomes (linked to the EYFS) 
   

Children will:                         

  • Develop confidence sequencing simple numbers (MATH)
  • Learn how to subtract two or more single digit numbers (MATH)
  • Learn and contribute to the delivery of a rhyme (CL)

 


 

How to Play

1. RECITE the following rhyme using fingers to represent the apples:
 

10 juicy apples growing on the tree, 
1 for you and 1 for me. 
1 for the fuzzy-wuzzy bumble bee
How many apples are growing on the tree?  
 

2. Encourage children to count how many apples are left on the tree 

 

3. Continue to play, differentiating the activity as appropriate i.e.:  

 

For younger learners: 
5 juicy apples growing on the tree,
1 for you and 1 for me.  
0 for the fuzzy-wuzzy bumble bee, 
How many apples are growing on the tree?    

 

For older learners: 
10 juicy apples growing on the tree, 
2 for you and 1 for me.  
2 for the fuzzy-wuzzy bumble bee,
How many apples are growing on the tree?
