Children will:

  • Contribute to a whole-group discussion (CL)
  • Sing together (EAD)
  • Take it in turns to take the lead role in a game (PSED)

Resources required:
A hat

How to Play

1. Sit in a circle and explain to the children that your friend, Arabella, has lost her umbrella. Explain that Arabella is worried it's going to rain because without an umbrella her hair will go frizzy.
Q: What could my friend Arabella do if it starts to rain? Encourage children to share their ideas

2. SING: Arabella's Umbrella (to the tune of 'Little Bo Peep')

Arabella has lost her umbrella,
And doesn’t know where to find one.
She better get busy,
Her hair's going frizzy,
She'll just have to put her new hat on.

3. Once children are familiar with the song, ask for a volunteer who should take on the role of Arabella

4. Place a hat in the middle of the circle and encourage everyone to sing again, this time the first four lines only:

Arabella has lost her umbrella,
And doesn’t know where to find one.
She better get busy,
Her hair's going frizzy...

5. At the appropriate time, the child playing Arabella should place the hat on his/her head and complete the song with the line, "I'll just have to put my new hat on."

6. Continue to play, with children taking it in turns to take on the role of Arabella
