Worm Race!

Learning Outcomes (linked to the EYFS)

Children will:

  • Practise moving different parts of the body (PD)
  • Practise moving in different ways, including running and being still (PD)
  • Learn and join in with the words of a new rhyme (LIT)
  • Pretend to be a worm (EAD)

How to Play

1. Encourage children to line up over one side of the room (you can also play outside, or encourage children to move on the spot if space is limited)

2. Encourage children to respond accordingly, as you RECITE 'Worm Race':

One worm squiggles (children squirm)
One worm jiggles (children shake)
One worm, he stays still (children freeze)
One worm tickles (children giggle quietly)
One worm giggles (children giggle loudly)
And wriggles up the hill (children run across the room/run on the spot)

3. Continue to play, encouraging children to join in with the rhyme

4. Extend the game by changing the rules - replace 'One worm' with the name of a different child each time (that child should squiggle/jiggle/stay still etc. accordingly). E.G.:

Sarah squiggles,
Carys jiggles,
Danny, he stays still.
Lianne tickles,
James giggles,
And wriggles up the hill
(James run across the room/runs on the spot)
